There is constant worry about blood sugar levels and the threat of permanent brain damage if low blood glucose is not caught and treated promptly. Current legislation limits certain career paths for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes as variable blood sugars can affect perception and decisions. Even worse though, is an uncertain future filled with the greatly increased potential for kidney failure, limb amputation, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and more. Research shows the average lifespan of an individual with Type 1 Diabetes is shortened by 10-15 years.
Given that greater than 1 in 300 Central Alberta students have Type 1 diabetes(1) and 4-6 new children are diagnosed every week at the Stollery Children’s Hospital(2), I would like to take the time to introduce some programs offered by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation that may be of benefit to your students and their families.

Classroom technology helps students with learning disabilities www.smartbrief.com/cec A Canadian teacher says technology, such as laptop computers and electronic whiteboards, has led to improved achievement among struggling students and students with learning disabilities. Technology offers alternatives to traditional teaching and allows students to learn through different methods, educators said. For example, students are using one computer program that reads text aloud for them and another that teaches geography by allowing students to build their own maps on a computer program.
